Research Abstract |
1. We established a study method of beta diversity in vegetation as follows. 1) phytosociological sampling at 50-100 m intervals along the altitudinal gradient. 2) compiling two-way table, 3) matrix of altitudinal difference between sample sites, 4) matrix of compositional difference between sample sites, using similarity indices of Percentage Similarity (PS) and Community Coefficient (CC). 5) plotting the sample sites on a two-dimensional space of X-axis of altitudnal difference and Y-axis of similarities, and getting the regression line through the plotted sample sites. 6) the species turnover rate (STR) is the slope of the regression line, 7) the internal association (IA) is the projection of the line to the X-axis. 2. Beta diversity was studied in beech forest of Mts.Mitoku, Senjo, and Daisen, Tottori prefecture, where two synusiae of tree-to-shrub layr (TS) and herb layr (H), and phytocoenosis were analyzed. 3. In beech forest of Mt.Mitoku, for phytocoenosis IA=81.8 and STR=0.40-3, for TS, IA=85.7 and STR=0.38-3, and for H, IA=71.1 and STR=0.44-3. In beech forest of Mts.Senjo and Daisen, for phytocoenosis IA=93.3 and STR=0.68-3, for TS IA=100 and STR=0.66-3, and for H IA=85.1 and STR=0.82-3. 4) Values of IA and STR were higher in Mt.Mitoku than in Mts.Senjo and Daisen, although the reason is not clear. 5) Beta diversity in bryophitic vegetation was also studied on rock wall and ground soil of cave and on stonewall near waterfall, by using belt transect method and the newly established method stated above. In addition, alpha diversity was studied as well. 6) STR with CC were 62.62-3 on stonewalls and 1.51-3-8.13-3 on rock walls and soils of caves. Alpha diversity in Shannon's H' were 0.41-1.71 on stonewalls and 0.45-1.79 on rock walls and soils of caves. In the caves, alpha diversity usually shows high value at middle range of the environmental gradient studied.
