Research Abstract |
Fumarate homo- and binary random copolymers of bulky substituents such as, di(isopropy1), di(tert-buty1), di(cyclohexy1), hexafluoroisopropy1 isopropy1, and bis(beta, beta-dimethy1phenety1) [abb., DiPF, DtBF, DcHF, F_6iP and BMPEF, resp.] were synthesized and thier thin film properties as for [O_2/N_2/]-separation or [water/alcohol]-separation material were studied. Among the binary random copolymers prepared from the either two monomers of DiPF, DtBF and DcHF, DtBF-based copolymers with DtBF content of 80mo1% showed highest gas-permeation constants [P_<02> and P_<N2>] and separation factor, alpha. It is noteworthy that P_<02> of more than 10^<-8> cm^3(STP)cm/cm^2・s・cmHg and alpha of more than 4.0 can be attained by such simple copolymerization as the random introduction of the foreign units to the DtBF-based polymer decreased the crystallinity. Although the attempts to [water/alcohol]-separation by pervaporation method were not successful due to the swelling of films, similar examination by "evapomeation" method revealed that PDiPF films are quite useful for concentrating alcohol especially when the concentration of alcohol is about 10%. PF_6iP or PBMPEF, hopefully more advanced evapomeation material, were not suitable for filming due to their stiffness. Further study to utilize LB-filming process will be continued.
