Research Abstract

Calicivirus infections of dogs were investigated during the term of project. Two calicivirus strains were discovered in feces of dogs with diarrhea. One was a calicivirus antigenically related to feline caliciviruses (FCV) and the other was a new canine calicivirus (CaCV) showing no antigenic relations to FCV nor human calicivirus strains including Norwalk virus. The CaCV No.48 strain showed morphological characteristics of the Caliciviridae, and its genomic and protein characteristics are now under investigations. Puppies experimentally inoculated with the virus orally did not show any clinical diseases as observed in the dog from which the virus was originally isolated.
Seroepizootiologial results indicated that caliciviruses antigenically the same as, or related to the CaCV No.48 are widespread in the dog population in Kagoshima. An enzymelinked immunosorbent assay using hyper immune sera showed that 34.2% cases of 226 dog feces examined were positive results, but no virus was recovered by the cell culture method. Further detailed pathological as well as molecular biological studies are going on to clarify the significance as an clinical pathogen in dogs.
