| Research Abstract |
1. Distribution of A.cantonensis among rats
A total of 427 rats (Rattus norvegicus) live-trapped in all but Atsuta among the 16 wards of Nagoya City, were surveyed for infection with A.cantonensis. The parasites were found in the pulmonary artery of rats trapped in Meito, Minami and Minato wards with incidence of 6.1% (5/82), 1.8% (1/55) and 5.0% (2/40), respectively. Totally 8 or 1.9% of 427 rats were parasitized.
A total of 781 slugs which may serve as an intermediate host were collected in the 3 wards where A.cantonensis was found, and were examined for third-stage larvae by oral inoculation to rats. No parasite was recovered from the inoculated rats.
2. Serological dianosis for angiostrongylosis
Antigens for serological examination were extracted by sonication or freezing and thawing from first- and second-stage larvae, and adult worms of A.cantonensis. Better results were obtained by ELISA using an atigen extracted from male adult worms. Thus, the prevalence of ELISA antibodies to A.cantonensis among rats in Nagoya City was surveyed using this antigen. Of 412 rat sera, 25 (6.1%) were seropositive.
Much more research is needed before the present serological procedure can become technically feasible for serological diagnosis of angiostrongylosis.
