| Research Abstract |
The distribution and characteristics of the presaccadic slow negative potentials(PSN), associated with self-paced voluntary saccades were studied. There was a wide spread PSN, beginning at 1400msec prior to saccades with the maximum amplitude on the vertex. The amplitude of PSN was greater over the frontocentral electrodes contralateral to the direction of the saccades. These findings suggests that PSN reflects the activities of the supplementary motor area as well as the frontal eye field contralateral to the direction of saccades. In darkness, PSN associated with saccades did not extend to the occipital electrodes. Therefore, the occipital component of PSN may reflect activation of occipital cortices related to visual stimuli. The laterality of the amplitude of PSN may come from the paradoxical lateralization as seen on visual evoked potentials.
The Bereitschaftspotential(BP), studied by voluntary finger movements and imaginary finger movements, showed that the distribution, onset and amplitude of early component and the maximum component were about identical with voluntary movements and imaginary movements. It was suggested that the BP reflects the level of intention, thinking, attention, and programming of the movements. The actual excursion of the movement is not necessary for BP.
