Research Abstract

Recently, much attention has been paid to the seasonal afffective disorder(SAD). Photoperiod is postulated to be involved in SAD.The incidence of SAD is higher in women than men. Then we used helthy women as subjects to examin the seasonality in biology. First, we investigated a circadian patterm of plasma melatonin, sleep-wake rhythm and sleep structures in the four phases of the menstrual cycle in young healthy women under the controlled conditions. They stayd in an experimental facility, where temperature and humidity were kept within a narrow range, for three days in five successive week periods. They got up and went to bed at their preferable time. The menstrual cycle was divided into four phases (menstruation, follicular, early luteal and late luteal). The phase in plasma melatonin rhythm did not change. As for sleep-wake-rhythm, the wake-time on the first day was significantly delayd in the late luteal phase (P<0.05). The bed time did not change. For sleep structure, there was a significant difference in the amount of stage 3+4(P<0.05), which was more abundant in the follicular phase than in the luteal phase. The other parameters did not show any changes. Secong, the timing of sleep and sleep EEG parameters in 12 healthy female subjects were investigated in summer and winter under semi-natural conditions. The phase of bedtime was more delayd in winter than in summer. The circadian rhythm of rectal temperature was also delayd in winter. The percentage of stage 4 sleep and stage 3+4 sleep increased significantly in winter compared with summer. Previously, we investigated the seasonality of sleep in healthy male subjects under controlled conditions. The timing of sleep or circadian rhythm of rectal temperature were aldo delayd in winter. However, the duration of stage 4 sleep decreased and REM sleep increased significantly in winter. The difference of sleep structure between male and female might depend on the sex difference or experimental condition.
