Research Abstract |
Although a lot of bibliography related to geography and its adjacent fields have been published in many countries, its usage is not so vigorous because of unfamiliarization of its type and existence. The aim of this study is to facilitate to research on the existed study-outcomes through investigating, collecting, classifying and listing geographical bibliographies in the world. In order to accomplish this aim, firstly the union catalogs of major libraries in Japan and foreign countries such as National Diet Library, US Library of Congress and British Museum were investigated, and also bibliographical information deposited in major foreign universities was gathered by mailing method. As the result, about twenty-three thousand bibliographies could be collected. Then, these bibliographies were classified by two categories of geography, that is systematic and regional. In addition, the classified bibliographies were successibly subdivided into many small groups. One of the most difficult task in compiling the list of bibliography is to pursue the serial materials, including temporary publication. This difficulty was resolved by direct inquiry for the institutions mentioned above. During two years of 1992 and 1993, four volumes of list, as a part of this study result, were published under the title of "A world bibliography of geographical bibliographies". They include the author or compiler, published year, title, publisher, and periodicity of each bibliography. The listing format is followed by the US Library fo Congress's rule.
