Research Abstract

I found many documents about the incidents of Tsushima (the occupation of the island of Tsushima by Russians) of 1861 year in the Archive of the Russian Navy of petersburg in 1992. On the basis of these documents I explained. what role a famous scholar von Siebold playd in order to resolve the incidents of Tsushima.
Main documents are five letters of von Siebold to admiral Likhatchov from Yokohama and Edo. Reading these letters of we can understand. how von Siebold was respected and made much of from the Russian and Japanese Governments. But the proposal of von Siebold to resolve the incidents from a viewpoint of pro-Japanese and pro-Russians did not bring direct effect.
My interest is further enkindled by archives. which show the friendship between the imperial family of Japan and the Romanov Dynasty and the footsteps in Russia of some Japanese statemen like Hirofumi Ito and Aritomo Yamagata in the Meiji era.
Several Japanese princes visited Sankt-Petersburg, including princes Taruhito and Takehito Arisugawanomiya, Akihito Komatsunomiya. Grand dukes Alexei, Alexander Mikhailovich.Kiril Vladimilovich visited Japan from Russia.
A famous politician Ito visited Russia three times through his life. He proposed the policy of manchuria under the influence of the Russians. Korea under the influence of the Japanese. in order to avoid the Russo-Japanese war (1904-05). This plan of Ito developed into the Russo-Japanese Convention after the Russo-Japanese war.
