Research Abstract |
Japanese-American's ability to govern Hawaii comes from a great effort to educate their children, which they have done their best on. This year the research mainly focuses on collecting the data on the educational history in Hawaii and for Japanese-American. Dr.Hirata taking initiative, the research members have collected more than 100 books on the educational history of Hawaii and over 10,000 pages-copy from the original. The research members divided up the working, and each member engages in the research on one's theme. At present their study goes as follows : (1) Dr.Hirata is conducting research under the theme of "M.M.Scott and Education for Japanese-American". He made a presentation under the title of "120 Anniversary of the Reform of an Educational System, Scott and Japanese American Scholarship Association". He published his presentation in the book from last year. (2) Prof.Yoshida has been working on "English Language Learning of the 1st Generation of Japanese-American". Despite of his effort, he could not get enough data, because most of them passed away, which is to clarify the real condition of education for Japanese-American. (3) Associate Prof.Iida has collected considerably lots of data on "Japanese Language Teaching for the 2nd and 3rd Generations of Japanese-American". He is analyzing each datum and making use of them for his research. (4) Prof.Toshiko Hirata has done her research on "Women's Education for Japanese-American". She got much data and is using them in her lectures. (5) Dr.Adachi has collected materials on "The History of the Public Education in Hawaii and Japanese-American - the Change of the Percentage of School Attendance and Entrance into a School of Higher Grade among Races". He is still working on the theme, analyzing the data through reports of the educational system of Hawaii. Since this is only the 1st year on the research, all members, except Dr.Hirata, is still working on collecting data or information.
