Research Abstract |
There has been a great progress in high precision measurement of fundamental quantities which was achieved by utilizing an ion trap in quantum optics. The present study aims at applying this experimental method in order to investigate a very precise property of unstable nuclei. In the beginning, we had discussed about two possibilities i.e., measurements of high precision mass as well as hyperfine anomaly. After discussion with Profs.Kluge and Moore, we have decided to start for hyperfine anomaly at first. Since Prof.Werth of Mainz Univ. and his group have been expert in this field, we came to a conclusion to promote a collaboration work with his group by this exchange project. This collaboration has been found to be very fruitful and complementary for each other since at Mainz the ion trap system is off-line type which can only manipulate stable and long life radio-isotopes. r the research on short-life unstable nuclei. This year, the exchange fund has been used in research activities in three directions, viz, (1) collaboration with Mainz group to promote a laser-micro wave double resonance experiment, (2) development of injection technique of ions prepared outside of an ion trap, and (3) collection and/or exchange of physics information in relating fields. Regarding to (1), Prof.Werth and a post-doc of Mainz Univ. visited Japan to collaborate to a ^<43>Ca^+ double-resonance experiment at Laser Center of Electro Communication Univ., since the laser system has been assembled and tuned at that place and tested by a bench mark experiment of the double resonance. On the other hand, Wada of INS visited Mainz to discuss about the collaboration. In 1994 autumn, a doctor course student of Electro Comm. Univ. is invited to participate in an experiment at Mainz. Relating (2), Wada visited Univ. Gissen to work for a design of the cyclotron beam transport system for the ion trap system at INS. This collaboration was then proceeded by a visit of Prof. Wollnik of Gissen Univ. to INS. An INS engineer Mr.J.Tanaka visited Prof.Valli at Jyvaskyla Univ. to exchange the information of the ion-guide technique, especially of the recent INS work on a multiple rf field equipment SPIG. Relating to (3), Katayama visited several Institutes in USA to examine and exchange the recent results of ion trap experiments. At NIST, Dr.Wineland and his group has shown their interest on INS experiment, which will hopefully proceed to a future collaboration. Tanabe and Miyachi visited Europe to exchange the information of ion-atom interaction and a detector system, respectively. Kubono, Fukuda and Nagai visited GSI and Jyvaskyla to exchange the information of nuclear structure of unstable nuclei. Less
