Research Abstract |
This project revealed some of the critical issues for future of Japanese education, through comparative investigations of rural education and schooling in Alaska(U.S.A.), Magadan(Russia), and Hokkaido(Japan). Especially, on-site field studies in Alaska and Russia documented unique qualities of their educational practices concerning the relationships between schools and communities, children's lives and nature, and education for indigenous minorities. These studies offer valuable perspectives on Japanese compulsory educaion, which in struggling to promote empowerment of communities' educaional competencies, introduce education for natural environment conservation, and to overcome discimination against minorities. The report of the project appeared in "Various Aspects of Rural Education in the Pacific Rim Regione I,II"(Rural Educaion Research Institute, HUES,1995,1996).
