Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to clarify the structure of legal knowledge and, based on it, to develop the Legal Expert System which can realize legal reasoning on the computer system. In the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Priority Areas mentioned above, we have obtained success in ; 1) clarification of the structure of legal knowledge in general, 2) clarification of knowledge structure for United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG), 3) construction of legal knowledge-base of CISG, and construction of soft ware on the computer system such as inference engine and interface. These all brought about clarification of the general and specific structure of legal knowledge. According to this result of clarification of legal knowledge and the application of logic programming, the prototype of the Legal Expert System was developed as artificial intelligence to realize legal reasoning. The following evaluation is the publication and publicity of thi

s Research on Priority Areas (1) Evaluation : We experimentally applied our acquired results and developed system to the legal education, and the significance of the research results as well as further research problems were identified from the university students' response and the educational effect. Our research was highly evaluated by the demonstrations at the international conferences such as DEXA98, Jurix98, Jurix99, IVR99 and CTC6, and also won praise from the legal experts in this specific field at Harvard University, University of Pittsburgh and University of Indiana. (2) Publication : We held the meetings and the symposium to report our research results, published the reports of the research results in English, and recently published the one in Japanese. We also arranged the articles about the research results and published in book form, which is easy to understand for the public ("Artificial Intelligence in Law" published by Souseisha). (3) Publicity : Along with presentation of the research at various meetings and academic conferences as mentioned above, we have made our research results public on the Web site. Finally the methods of further development of the research results were discussed and clarified. The number of the presentation of the research results is as follows ; 6 reports-books of the research results in Japanese, 4 reports-books of the research results in English, 2 special issues of the journal in English and around 40 papers.
