Research Abstract |
By stressing the point of view of 'regionalism', which develops in and outside the nations in Europe, this reserch aimed to analize and examine comparatively the formation and the change of each 'nation-states', which have been considered to be the typical oraganization of the people to promote the 'modernization' in Enrope. Each investigator collected preceding literature and picked up some issues, and advanced the study based on each matter of concern and discussed each other. As the result of this, it became apparent that, though each states had different proper historical conditions, from the latter half of the 19th century to the age of imperialism onwards, at least seemingly highly 'artificial' formation of the nation-states was proceeding, that is to say, in each state, by the effect of the marking out of the 'defensive' boundaries and the propaganda of nationalism by the state or political elites leading it, the people were being unified within the framework of the nation-state. But, it is also apparent that as each state developed twistingly and contained various differentials and inconsistencies, its course of development can't be made clear by a single-truck way of explanation. In addtion, it was pointed out that, not only in states of Southern and Eastern Europe, where they started to modernize relatively late, but also in Germany, which has been said to be a typical nation-state, not a small number of the measures by the states to promote the unification were not necessarily successful. And also, it was confirmed that, while restrained from above, there were a lot of cases of the regionalisms rising and developing as sub-cultures. In any way, it is necessary to continue to examine the efficency of the organization principle, as the model to promote the modernization, of the nation-state, which is 'one and inseparable'.
