Research Abstract

The purpose of our research was to study the behavior of the firms in Japan, specifically thr process of their decision making. Our major interest lies in the following areas among others : how the spending on Research and Development is related to the profit, why some firms extend the variety of goods and services they produce.
We held seminars approximately once a month. Through our seminars, we worked on the following topics.
1. We surveyed the major works in this field in the U.S.and in Japan. We discussed the implications of previous research ; we focused on empirical studies.
2. We examined statistical data on firms and establishments that are available today in Japan.
3. The recent Business Structure and Activity Survey gives most detailed data on various aspects of larger firms. Thus we examined the structure of this survey : how it is designed, which items are related to the economic concepts we need in order to study the behavior of the firms, and so on.
4. We developed a database on firms, as well as some basic tools of analyzing these data. This database will give us a solid basis for further studies.
