Research Abstract |
This research is composed of two themes. The first part comprises an analytical survey of the status of artistic activities in Japan. In this survey, business establishments in the field of culture and arts were picked from 1989 Survey on Service Industries, conducted by the Statistics Bureau, to draw specific aggregates in accordance with detailed industrial classifications. Among other things, the figures reveal : the original distribution of theatrical companies, theaters and individual artists ; scale of establishment by the number of employees and differences in the makeup of employees according to the period of opening ; and managerial status of art group establishments. As a supplement, the research includes case studies which examines and describes the artical activities and communal activities of cultural centers in a district in the Kansai region. The second part outlines the latest developments in arts management and culturul policies in the West. Due to the differences in the conditions of each country, uniform standards could not be adopted in the survey, however, it does point out topics distinct to each country. The section on the U.S.A.deals with the government's past and present policies to support artistic and cultural activities, and challenges in the field. The section on Britain also outlines past and present policies to back up arts, and the status of arts management that accompanies it. Similary, the second part outlines : the characteristics of cultural policies and status of theatrical organization and management in Germany ; the characteristics of art and culture policies and the activities in the field of opera and theater in Italy ; the characteristics of policies in arts and culture in France. The data used in the report for countries are those taken after around 1992.
