| Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to establish the conception of artistic copies by discussing their values as documents. In the case of painting, copy has two major uses in a broad sense ; first, it is used for practicing the paint brush techniquos ; second, as documents for later production of works, it provides various motifs for the pattern arrangement.
This study, moreover, directs its attention to the fact that copies help us to reconstruct the patterns of the original works that do not exist now.
We confine the subjects of our study to the documents of the Edo period in the fields of painting, dyeing and weaving, and calligraphy, and consider each of their problems by examining the aims of production in those days. We discuss the uses of copy-works, not from the viewpoint fo the painters, craftsmen and calligraphers, but from that of arthistrical study. Collecting relevant documents such as copy, miniature, copybook and model, we intend to make up for the missing elements of the original works which are already lost, and to characterize the copy-works in its broad sense and take their values into further consideration. However, as the number of potential existing copies is too huge, teh main point of this study is not only to present its results but also to bring forward some problems for the future studies of copy-works.
