Research Abstract

The objectives of this research have been successfully attained after two years of research. The major research results obtained are as follows ;
1. Mechanics of vibration cutting
Fundamental cutting tests were carried out within a scanning electron microscope, and the processes of vibration cutting were observed directly and compared by changing the direction of the tool vibration. It was clarified that the chip thickness and the cutting force are influenced considerable by the direction, and that the thickness and the force are much reduced as compared to those obtained by the ordinary cutting when the inclination angle of the tool vibration is negative. It was found that the reduction is caused by the small chip generated between the main chip generation.
2. Effects of tool vibration on ductile cutting of glass
It was found that ultrasonic vibration cutting is advantageous for ductile cutting of glass. The critical depth of cut is increased, and the profile of cutting edge is better transferred to that of cut groove by applying the ultrasonic vibration.
3. Ductile cutting of brittle materials
Transparent cutting of soda-lime glass and optical glass BK7 was realized by the ultrasonic vibration cutting, and the surface roughness was about 0.03-0.06 mum Rmax. Ductile cutting of various brittle materials such as single crystal materials (LiNb03, Si) and ceramics (ZiO2) was tried by the conventional diamond cutting and the ultrasonic vibration cutting, but no important advantages have been found in this case.
