Research Abstract

1.The oil film reaction forces in squeeze film damper bearing was theoretically obtained for reciprocative loading normally found in crankshaft bearings of automobile engines. Based on the theory, a computer program was developed and coded to simulate the dynamic response of squeeze film damper bearing under the reciprocative loading. This simulation program enables to predict the behavior of a damper journal in the damper bearing installed in actual automobile engines.
2.A test rig was set up to measure the dynamic characteristics of squeeze film damper bearings under reciprocative loading, that is, the dynamic response of damper journal in the bearing and also the hydrodynamic pressure developed in the oil film. Measurements proved to be in good agreement with predictions.
3.The simulation program was modified to take into consideration the inertia effects of the oil film. The modified theory was in beter agreement with measurements at high reciprocative frequency of loading where the inertia effect was considered to be pronounced.
