Research Abstract |
The stand structure of forest border in three artificial forests and two natural forests were investigated to study the effects of forest edge to inner border of stands. Relative light intensity under forest canopy decreases from the edge toward the stand interior up to about the same or little more distsnce as the height of overstory trees. Basal area at old artificial forest border decreases as the distance from the edge to inner stand increases. Leaf area index of stands at edge and inner stand surveying with Li-Cor LAI-2000, almost no difference were founded. The relations of relatve light intensity under forest canopy to species composition, density and biomass of under-growth around the forest border were discussed. The crown structure of Quercus glauca saplings grown under the deep shade and around the border in natural chamaecyparis obtusa forest were investgated to study the effects of light deficiency on mechannical and morphological adjustment of leaf in crown. The specific leaf area increases, and the leaf area density decreases as the light intensity decreases. Also the crown volume per branch weight increases under deep shade in stand.
