Research Abstract

This project evaluated a phase-contrast cine MRI technique in bilateral carotid arteries and basilar artery of 26 normal volunteers to measure total cerebral blood flow in human being noninvasively. The used MRI system was Gyroscan S-15 (Philips Co.) in National Institute of Radiological Sciences. The mean value and standard deviation of total cerebral blood flow in normal volunteers is 599? B1128 ml/min, and that of mean cerebral blood flow is 44.4? B19.6 ml/100cm^3/min. These values are acceptable to compare the values previously reported using other method. The total cerebral blood flow of the normal volunteers has no correlation with age. The volume flow rates of biateral carotid arteries and basilar artery showed no significant correlation with age. To use for one of clinical application of this method, regional cerebral blood flow was calculated using IMP-SPECT and the values of total cerebral blood flow. By the method, cerebral cortices indicated 51-60 ml/100cm^3/min, and cerebellar hemispheres are 47-49 ml/100cm^3/min. These values are acceptable comparing previous reports. It is confirmed that the method developed in this study is simple and reliable measurement to evaluate whole and regional cerebral blood flow.
