Research Abstract |
The aims for construction of the Mooring Continuous Plankton Sampler (MCPS) are (1) simple structure, (2) easy operations, (3) small body to be easy handlingeven with one person, and (4) cheap cost. The main parts consist of (1) sampling nets with plate frame for catch and preservation of plankters, (2) Timer for control the sampling intervals, (3) triger and releasing mechanism the sampling nets, (4) flow meter for estimating the volume of water filtered, (5) main frame, and (6) mooring system. The sampling nets are made from the plastic board (140mmx140mm, 10mm thickness). The plastic boards are made a 100mm diameter hole and ruler at the side respectively. The plankton nets are attached the hole respectively. The working principle is to slide the sampling nets from waiting area to filtering area. and then to preserving area by pantagraph type spring. The stoppers of the sampling nets are released by timer and triger mechanism. The preservation of the plankters collected is carried out by concentrated salt water for harmless for environment. Before begining this project, there were 4 conceptions as MCPS,we tried each type then made a prototype of best working. Mooring tests are sometimes carried out at Tokyo Bay, the sampling nets are functioning properly though some nets bad operation. It was difficult to be good operation with all nets. More improvements are required for perfect operation. We think that it is better to make more strong pantagraph type spring, then all nets will be used under good condition.
