Research Abstract |
The composite crystal is formed by an interpenetration of two or more subsystems in a crystal. Each subsystem is described to be an ordinary space group. The interpenetration of two or more subsystems forms new space group and sometimes makes a situation difficult to describe the crystal using ordinary space group. Nd-Fe-B B-rich phase is known to be one dimensional composite crystal. There are several reports on the lattice parameter c. The interpenetration of two subsystems makes a situation complicated and leads a several reports on the c axis. We examined an effect of B and Nd concentration on the Nd-Fe-B composite crystal to clarify the situation. The impurities found in our concentration range are NdB4 and Fe2B.The amount of the impurities is depend on Nd and B concentration. This result reveals that the composite crystal is formed at off-stoichiometry of Nd concentration. The most favorable concentration of the composite crystal may be Nd1.2Fe4B4. It was found that the lattice parameter of the c axis is determined by the difference of the c axis of Nd and Fe subsystems in our previous study. Structure analysis shows that B atoms are located close to Nd atoms. This configuration of atoms makes us think that B concentration affects the c axis of the Nd subsystem. Although, in the present study, the c axis of Nd subsystem changes with varying Nd concentration, it is not affected with varying B concentration. Furthermore the c axis of Fe subsystem dose not change for both case. Thus the c axis of the composite crystal is determined from the concentration of Nd atoms.
