Research Abstract |
The microcystic meningioma was first reported by Masson, who called it "meningioma humide". Later, Eimoto et al reported that the proliferation style of this type resembles the growth pattern of the subarachnoid space. Tsunoda et al proposed the view that the microcystic meningioma represents differentiation into arachnoid trabecular cells, on the grounds that the microcystic component resemble the arachnoid trabecular cells which support the normal sub-arachnoid space, as observed under an electron microscope. In the present study, arachnoid trabecular cells were found to be GST-pi positive in the normal arachnoid villi and in microcystic meningiomas. It seems therefore likely that the arachnoid trabecular cells serve not only as supportive cells but also as cells which detoxify harmful substances in normal subarachnoid space.
