Research Abstract

The purpose of the research is to develop a method of computer formation of brush-written Kanji (Chinese and Japanese) characters using calligraphic kowledge, which is for educational training system of brush writing. We have developed the pilot system. This system can generate skeltons of character from on-line handwritten character input, and formates the calligraphic character based on models of brush shape, touch on paper, and brush writing movement.
The style of brush handwriting depens mainly on the way of using the writing brush. Brush writing skills include the direction of brush at the beginning, curvature, brush turning, and the brush-up at the termination poin in a stroke. We have revised the calligraphic knowledge according to the aforementioned brush writing skills. For simulating real brush movement, We devised the brush contact form that is the brush shape on the writing plane (paper) as a brush-touch. The system can control the size and direction of this brush-touch during the brush simulation. The system simulates the real brush writing motion and situation based on the skeltons in the data base of this system. Accordingly, the system user (or trainee) can learn the skills of brush handwriting such as the brush-touch from the calligraphic knowledge data base in this system.
We consider that this system is useful for students who want to learn how to beautifully write Japanese letters by brush pen.
