Research Abstract

To clarify the relationship between air pollutants and enduction of allergic diseases, studies on the effects of diesel exhaust particulates (DEP) and on the effects of No_2 exposure were performed. First, intratracheal or intranasal instillation with DEP and antigen induced enhanced antigen specific IgE antibody production in mice. The levels of interleukin-4 production from local lymph node cells were significantly increased. On the contrary, the levels of interferon-gamma were decreased compared with those of control mice. Second, guinea pigs and rats were exposed to low concentrations of NO_2 for 3 months and lung mast cells were isolated by the methods of enzymatic digestion. Although lung mast cells in NO_2 exposed rats did not increase IgE-mediated histamine release, lung mast cells in NO_2 exposed guinea pigs significantly increased the histamine release. These things suggest that air pollutants such as DEP and NO_2 may affect the activities of lymphocytes and mast cells involved in allergic responses.
