Research Abstract |
Electrophysiological evaluation of consciousness level was investigated by means of "Automated Fluctuation Analysis". All the healthy subjects who did not feel sleepiness has frontal dominant topographical pattern of S1 value of initial Lorentz, which well corresponded with the distributional pattern of normal cortical cerebral blood flow. This hyperfrontal pattern of S1 value which corresponded with cortical function disappeared when the subjects acknowledging sleepiness or fell asleep. There waw statistical significances about S2 value of second Lorentz which became lower during sleepiness and equal to white level during sleep. This fine alteration of S2 valued strongly suggests that second Lorentz reflects subcortical brain function especiaaly reticular activation system. Next, demented state was electrophysiologically investigated by means of "Automated Fluctuatin Analysis". Low S2 value without normal hyperfrontal pattern of S1 value withous sleepiness was common findings. This findings strongly suggests that not only reduced prefrontal cortical function but also reduced subcortical function of diffuse cortical activation system shold have the key solve the mechanisms of demented state. "Automated Fluctuation Analysis" is also a useful method as pharmaco EEG.Effect of nootropic drug TA-0910 was evaluated with another psychological examination. Statistically significant elavation of Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) score was well corresponded with stasistically significant elevation fo S2 value. Moreover, correlation between MMSE score and S2 value was statistically significant at Pz and not significant at z. As commonnly accepted, MMSE is one of the psychological examination to evaluate higher brain function behind the central sulcus. So this result was very reasonable. From these findings "Automated Fluctuation Analysis" of human high frequency EEG is a very reliable method for evaluation of brain function.
