Research Abstract |
When single reed playrs (saxophonists and clarinetists) play their instruments, most of them have uncomfortable feelings caused by uneven or sharp lower incisor teeth which press their lower lips. The lip shield is a kind of removable splint basically for avoiding chronic pain in the lower lip of the single reed playr by overing the lower incisor teeth with ome materials. While it is said that the tone quality and controllability are generally improved when the lip shield is attached, an experimental study on the shape and material of a lip shields has seldom been conducted. Through our acoustic experiment, we found that out of the three types of lip shields made of acrylic resin in different shapes, the new one, which we call "Nakano Model", swelling slightly in the middle, exhibited the best tone quality and controllability. And this study addresses an acoustic analysis of the difference in tone quality of four materials shaped into the "Nakano Model" lip shield.
