Research Abstract

Morphological, cytological and molecular analysis of Aster ageratoides complex in Korea had been studied. We collected about 500 plants from 35 population in Korea. In morphological study, two groups were recognized by leaf shape and stolon. One type has ovate leaves and stolon, and the other has lanceolate leaves and no stolon. The former distributes in south-east Korea and the distribution area is restricted, whereas the latter grows widely in Korea. These two types of plants do not occur in same area.
From the cytological analysis, all plants collected in Korea were diploid and it is quite difference the speciation pattern in Japan in which the plants make a polyploid complex. We had performed the RFLP analysis of cpDNA of the plants collected in Korea. As a result, no difference between two types had been detected in the present analysis, showing closely relatedness of two types. For comparing to the plants in Japan, we had reconstructed the phylogenetic tree of the result of present study and previous result of Japanese plants. The most parsimonious tree shows a topology which the Korean plants branched first, and then the Japanese plants are diverged. This result suggests that the Japanese plants of Aster ageratoides complex had been diverged in Japan.
