Research Abstract |
This is a project for a international cooperative research program between Japan and USA financially supported by the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture in Japan. This project was two years program from 1994 fiscal year to develop a process to storage the low-level heat under 80 ゚C and to upgrade it to the highlevel heat around 200 ゚C using solar thermal energy as the primary energy input. The major objective of the program was to investigate a process feasibility of a solar-driven chemical heat pump, which was combined a chemical heat pump system being developed in Japan with solar panel and process interface technologies being developed in USA.This project has combined many isolated research activites conducted in the two countries and made effective use of them by cooperative research and sharing of research results. The process proposed in this project has also a big potential for decreasing CO_2 emission into the environment from industries by the energy saving cau

sed by application to the efficient utilization of huge amounts of low-level heat exhausted from industries. Many technological problems must be solved to improve the thermal efficiency and to apply this system for effective utilization of solar energy. This project was planed to build on the following works already done in the USA and Japan and to make new technologies to overcome a wall of low thermal efficiency and to make realize new type of chemical heat pump using solar energy. 1. Solar utilization technologies of solar receivers and control being developed in the USA. 2. Chemical heat pump technologies being developed in Japan. 3. Technology of plate-type catalyst with high thermal conductivity being developed in Japan. 4. New type of unit operations such as plat type catalytic reactor and internal heat integrated distilllation column. 5. Energy and Exergy analysis of chemical process by using ASPEN PLUS process simulator installed in each research laboratories. 6. New process designs being discussed between USA and Japan. As a conclusion, several key technologies was recommended to be introduced for improving thermal efficiency of this chemical heat pump system. Less
