Research Abstract

The primary aim of this project is the development of a descriptive and analytical tool for exploring the English as a foreign language instruction in the classroom. We have successfully achieved this goal.
The tool is so designed that it captures all the utterances and nonverbal behaviors of both the teacher (s) and student (s). It can also code the partticipants of the classroom interaction, which forms the core of nurturing communicative competence. Then, it can take in the information about the modes of language behavior in terms of four skills. The accuracy and correcteness of the utterances are also marked in the data file.
The job of coding starts with indexing all the teaching-learning behaviors, and then, it proceeds to categorizing the indexed verbal and nonverbal moves. All these jobs are done viewing the 1/4 image of the classroom instruction which is projected on the computer's display. Since this suystem tries to extract so many bits of information, the real time coding is impossible. However, we can easily adapt the present system for that purpose by taking out the most simple and core elements out of the system.
By the development of this system, we are able to capture vaious aspects invloved in the process of teaching and learning of English as a foreign language in the classroom.
