Research Abstract

Proper housing and care of laboratory animals is essential to their welfare and also to avoid biohazards (Law No.105, Japan : 1973), to the validity of research data and the health and safety of the researcher and animal care staff (Prime Ministers Office, Japan : 1980 ; Science Council : 1980/Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture : 1987 ; JALAS : 1987). Proper housing and care includes both hardware and software aspects, and here we touched on the matter of the design and size of cagesetc., for which there is not yet complete consensus in the Guideline for Animal Experimentation : An Explanation (JALAS,1991) . We have sometimes difficulties to proceed scientific papers on the international journals because we usually sue smaller cages than those of USA,Canaka, European Comunity, or United Kingdom ofr rabbits, cats, dogs and monkeys. We felt needs to prepare the guide for housing of experimental animals.
By the present work, We proposed 4BS formula. In 4BS formula, four domains are eatablished in mind. These are for (1) rest and sleep, (2) eating and drinking, (3) excretion and (4) a place for at least a minimum amount of movement including searching, and in relation to each of these, apply the amount of 1 bed space (BS) required when sleeping. This applies the idea that 1BS unit should be allotted to each of the basic life activities in laboratory . That is 4 times bed size (4BS) is tobe floorspace. We will propose the 4BS cage size to Japanese society because there are much comformity in it with American and European standard values .
