Research Abstract

The main purpose of this research project is to prepare a new list of scientific terms in seismology including related fields of earth sciences (parts of volcanology, geodesy, geomagnetism, geology, etc.). The new list will be used for making the revised and enlarged edition of "Japanese Scientific Terms, Seismology" compiled by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. The first edition of this book was published in 1974.
The research group consisting of 17 investigators in observational, theoretical, and practical seismology, geodesy, tectonics, volcanology, geomagnetism, etc. collected scientific terms used in seismology from technical books and research papers in Japanese and English. About 11,000 terms were filed by the end of 1994. They were classified into 15 fields (such as seismometry, seismic waves, earth structure, earthquake source process, seismotectonics, earthquake engineering), and were carefully examined for suitability to standard scientific terms.
After all, 4637 Japanese terms and 4615 English terms have been selected. Every English term and Japanese term have at least one corresponding Japanese and English term, respectively. Among 2454 terms in the first edition of the above-mentioned book, 863 terms have been deleted and 229 terms have been modified. The number of newly selected terms are 3046. All adopted terms have been listed in the Project Report published in March, 1997 in alphabetical order in two forms ; Japanese (Roman letters)-Japanese-English and English-Japanese-Japanese (Roman lerrers).
