Research Abstract |
We sent out questionnaires regarding on current situations in Area Studies both to individual researchers and research institutions. The researchers were chosen among the Japanese forty five (45) academic association directories, which enlisted more than 23,000 members. The institutions were selected from both public and private research institutions, graduate schools, and organizations in government offices, which numbered about 200. Area Studies is a newly born subject and it consists of various disciplines. Thus we needed to send out huge number of questionnaire in order to capture holistic views. We have received about 7,000 replies. This means that Area Studies attracted a lot of scholars in the present Japanese academic circles. These data have been made into a data base, which we call the "World Area Studies Data Base". Part of the results were readable in our two publications titled Directory on Area Studies Scholars and Current Situation on Area Studies. The former is a directory that contains areas and topics of each researcher's interest. The latter is made up of two parts. The first part is a compilation of answers from the institutions. It is followed by a close analysis of the current situation in Area Studies in Japan. It aims that these publications are to be utilized in promoting exchanges among researchers and the institutions. Toward this objective, it is needed to maintain the data base to update its information. At the same time, it is also necessary to gain more new records to serve as the "World Area Studies Data Base". In the near future, it is hoped that our data base will be one of the most promising ones in the world not only in Japan to serve as the real data base for Area Studies.
