Research Abstract

This study was composed of three part ; (1)a theoretical stucy on academic orgamization reforms in the post-massification stage, (2) a survey on academic organizational reforms in Japan, (3) a cross-national study of academic organizational reforms.
(1) In our theoretical study on academic organizational reforms in the post-massification stage, we have analyzed the evelopmental process of Japanese higher deducation theoretically, historically and quatnitativley, in order to define a post-massification stage. In consequence, it became clear that Japanese higher education had already reached a post-massification stage in the '70's, and that the '90's constitute a second stage of post-massification. In relation to these studies, we established a data-base of Japanese higher education.
(2) In a survey by questionnaire on academic organizational reforma in Japan, we asked Presidents and Deans about reforms of educational, research, management, and social service organization in each university and faculty. To supplement this survey, we conducted interviews with professors and administrators in several universities. From these surveys, it became clear that, eapesially after 1990, various organizational reforms have been either implemented or considered for implementation in many Japanese universities.
(3) In the cross-national study on academic organization reforms, we selected as objects of study universities in the following countries : U.S.A., U.K., Germany, France Australia, China, and a number of other Asian countries including Singapore, Thailand. We collected some 200 rets of data on academic organization in the foreign univeristies. Analysis on the data has shown that university or academic organizational reforms have been already introduced in each of the countries that we selected as objects of our study.
