Research Abstract

The contraction of the prostate induced by alpha_1-adrenergic receptor agonist was examined in regards to the possible changes in properties when exposed to endocrinological and thermal stimuli. Thermal effects by laser irradiation induced little changes in contraction force and Kd and Bmax of alpha_1-adrenergic receptor of the human prostate. Castrated rat prostate was used as the model to examine the possible changes of the receptor by androgen deprivation. The contraction force per a unit weight of the prostate was two to three-fold increased by castration, whilst the binding assay between prazosin and receptor and inhibition assay competed by prazosin or phenylephrine showed no essential changes in receptor properties. These results indicate that alpha_1-adrenergic receptor is little affected by endocrionological and thermal interventions. The clinical implications of these characters of alpha_1-adrenergic receptor of the prostate warrant further studies.
