| Research Abstract |
In this research, we developed a management system for software development projects in graduate school, and use it in educational setting. The system automatically collects software process and product data and performs analysis to provide feedback to programrs. The information provided by the system allows students to assess their progress in programming projects and determine how their work compares with that of other students. Instructors can also use this information to identify students who need extra attention. The system also provides students with a mechanism of reporting software process using World Wide Web (WWW). The mechanism is appropriate to report various situations of software development activities with loose constraints. The system has been evaluated experimentally in programming classes, both at Osaka University and Nara Institute of Science and Technology. The results of this evaluation indicate that the information feedback provided by the system is effective in helping students achieve their goal, and in reporting their situations in their own ways.
To date, our system has been used primarily in educational contexts. However, we believe that such an environment can also be valuable in providing assessment and feedback in actual software development projects. For example, project managers could use measurement capabilities of our system to obtain early indicators of problems. The system is currently capable of providing several of management indicators. Individual developers or programming teams could also use feedback on their own performance to modify or re-direct their efforts in a manner analogous to that used by students in the educational setting described here.
