Research Abstract

The isotope effect on hydrogen molecule elimination reaction from 2,3-dime-thylbutane cations (h-DMB^+) and 2,3-dimethylbutane-2,3-d_2 cations (d-DMB^+) has been studied at 77 K.The significant isotope effect (k(h-DMB^+)/k(d-DMB^+)=1.7*10^4) on the reaction was explained in terms of a model of the tunneling elimination of a hydrogen molecule from a DMB^+ ion.
A large isotope effect (*20-50) on the reaction between long-lived radicals that are related to DNA mutation and h-vitamin C (or d-vitamin C) has been observed in concentrated protein solution that is a model of cells. The large isotope effect indicates the importance of a tunneling reaction in a biological system.
H_2^- anions has been observed clearly for the first time by use of a high-resolution-ESR spectroscopy in solid hydrogen at 2.4K.The H_2^- anions decay at 4.2 K by tunneling.
