Research Abstract

Infants infected with herpes simplex virus (HSV) or cytomegalovirus (CMV) has been shown to be increasing in Japan, which is caused by transmission of HSV or CMV from mother with primary infection of these viruses. This study was undertaken to investigate how frequently seronegative pregnant women for HSV or CMV are present in Japan.
1)During 1994-96,577 pregnant women were checked for HSV antibody using ELISA method. Among these, 298 (51.6%) were positive and the remaining (48.4%) negative. This suggest that about half of the pregnant women can be a candidate for primary infection of HSV in Japan which seems to suggest the recent increasing tendency of neonatal herpes.
2)To investigate HSV infection during pregnancy, IgM antibody for HSV was checked. Thirty seven were positive for IgM antibody. Among these, 24 had IgG antibody at the same time which means these women were already infected with HSV and IgG positivity resulted from reactivation of HSV.Thirteen (4.3%) were shown to be primarily infected with HSV during pregnancy. Infants born to these mothers were healthy with no sequelae.
3)Primary infection of cytomegalovirus has been shown to cause congenital cytomegalovirus infection with mild to severe sequelae. To investigate primary infection of CMV during pregnancy, IgM antibody to CMV was checked in 204 pregnant women. IgM antibody to CMV was found in 2.3% of second trimeters and 9.3% of third trimester women respectively. These pregnant women were positive for IgG antibldy too, which suggest reactivation of CMV occurred in these pregnant women. From two of these, CMV was isolated from the cervix. Infants born to these pregnant women were normal and whithout any sequelae.
