Research Abstract |
We have investigated the nutritional and biochemical problems on vitamin D and its active derivatives and the following results have been obtained : (1) When the effects of dietary calcium and vitamin D on vitamin D-defficient rats, we found that sufficient amounts of oral supplementation of vitamin D gave positive effects on increasing bone mineral density (BMD) and mechanical bone strength (MBS) even calcium nutrtional status was low. The activity is more effective in male rats than in female rats. (2) 2beta- (Hydroxypropoxy) -1alpha, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D_3 (ED-71), a novel analog of 1alpha, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D_3 (active form of vitamin D_3), was confirmed to have longer hal life in blood than 1alpha, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D_3 and more effective for preventive and therpaeutic activity than 1alpha, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D_3. (3) The vitamin D nutritional status in institutionalized elderly people is lower than those in young subjects and therefore dietary intake of vitamin D is recommended for the elderly subjects. (4) Successive supplementation of vitamin D is useful for prevention and treatment of vitamin D deficiency. Daily intakes of 200 IU of vitamin D for adults including elderly people revealed to give positive effects on their vitamin D nutritional status.
