Research Abstract

The aim of the project is to investigate the actual conditions of local manufacturing industries and the process of restructurings of localized industries in a sociological perspective. We selected Nagano Prefecture as a research field and surveyed some areas and some licalized industries.
Nagano Prefecture experienced restructuring of industries twice. First restructuring started around 1940's and completed 1970's. And the central axis of industrial structure shifted from silk industries to machine industries. But after 1985, globalization of economy and growth of service economy transformed the social base of regional industries. Now second restructuring of Nagano is going on.
We selected precision machine industry of Suwa area as a most succesful example of first restructuring of local industry. The process of first restructuring and the actual conditions of Suwa's local industry analized. The precision machine matured and the growth of new industries needs.
We researched small business of machine industry in Maruko Town. We analized the actual conditions of these firms and the process of production and reproduction of them. In the era of economic high-growth, the social and economic conditions of local small town like Maruko could produce many small indusrialists. Now transformation of industrial structure and conditions of man-power supply demolished the social bases of the reproduction of them. The most inportant problem to perform second restructuring is to remake and renew these bases.
