Research Abstract |
In this reseach I tried to clarify the characters of the formation of the great land estates in Andalusia (southern province of Spain) in the Middle Ages. My conclusions of this research are as follows. 1.The great land estates had been formed by the repartimiento (distribution of the lands conquered from the Muslims), and didn't changed until the end of the Middle Ages. This traditional view is not correct. Possessions of land by individuals grew larger by purchase or seizure and those by institutions (chapters, monasteries and military orders) grew larger by donation. These process were very complicated. 2.The great land estates were formed by the first acqusition or at the early stages. So the process thereafter was that of becoming larger of the great land estates that had been formed. 3.The great land estates formed in the 13th century are numerous. The recent view stress the 14th and 15th centuries as the periods of the formation of those. But these great land estates were mostly possessions of the secular individuals, that were usually domains of jurisdiction which did not include the proprietor-ship of lands. So the recent view has to be revised Besides these conclusions, I want to mention the relationship of the status of the individuals with the land possession. These were become causes and results of the other alternately and brought about the complicate changes of the land possesions in the medieval Andalusia.
