Research Abstract

In the fields of optical communication and optical information processing, development of high-speed and high efficiency optical modulator is one of the most important targets. High speed optical modulator with LiNbO_3 is most promising as the ultra-high speed optical modulator in the next generation in place of the direct modulator using semiconductor lasers. The performance of this modulator was limited by the olsses in the signal electrode. The purpose of this research is to introduce superconducting electrodes with low loss and low dispersion characteristics to overcome this problem.
In this year the following research has been made :
1) performance evaluation using computor simulation
2) change from He-Ne laser to semiconductor laser
3) introduction of high quality Nb film as an electrode material
4) introduction of automatic measurement of experimental data using GP-IB
5) enlargement of substrate length from 15mm to 30mm
