Research Abstract |
The paddy side banks had important functions beside holding water for Japanese traditional farming. For example, those were even places of the grasslands where farmers took grass for livestock. Therefore, the grasslands on the paddy side had been managed carefully, consequently they also play an important part in the habitats of various life. But recently, agricultural style had be changed by machines. The cattle which had been pulled a plow had lost their position. These changes endangered the value of paddy side in agro-ecosystem as conservation area for biological diversity. Some investigations were made to reveal the biological value of paddy side grasslands. 1. The floristic composition of the paddy side grass community were investigated at several region, Fukui, Niigata, Aichi and Kumamoto. 2. Temperature and the light inside and outside of the communities were measured continuously. 3. The above ground biomass of paddy side grassland were investigated from May to December. The re-growth biomass in a month after mowing were also investigated. 4. The grassland in a river flat were mowed at different frequencies and at different season, once in every month, once in every other month, once in a year but different month from April to November. 5. According to the results some methods for vegetation management were shown.
