Research Abstract |
Some of ongoing space projects that have been conducted in various research sectors include the development of crop production system in space. A crop production system in space will become important in the future for providing those who work in space facilities with essential fibers. The development of crop production system in space involves many aspects of scientific and engineering achievement. Researches on culture technology of crops in space, plant physiology in space, plant breeding for space use, environmental control system for culture cell, and production system design and fabrication have been given priority. The key concept of this experimental culture cell for rice plant is that, in space, one should be able to convert a form of energy such as electricity into food by utilizing the biological function of energy fixation efficiently and effectively. This experimental culture cell will be use to explore the realization of fully automated energy-food cenversion system in spa

ce. The essential features of this experimental system are following : 1) utilization of super dwarf variety of rice plant of which height is about 15 cm at its mature stage and which has been bred for this special purpose ; 2) application of hydroponic culture technology for rice ; 3) utilization of centrifugal device to provide the culture envionment with artificial gravity, 4) application of advanced intelligent system control scheme based on the bio-response feedback/feed forward technique for environmental control for the culture ceil. In this research, non linear system identification for the vegetative growth needed to develop the bio-response feedback technique for environmental control was discussed. The following results were obtained from this research work. 1) Development of software system ; a software system that provides a cooccurrence matrix of captured image of growing plants recorded on a video tape was developed and tested its performance : 2) Development of experimental hardware system ; a hardware system that enable to acquire digital image of growing plant in SPACETRON was developed : 3) Sampling of Training data for the neural network model ; Training data for the neural network model used to identify the growth pattern of leafy vegetables were obtained using the SPACETRON equipped with the image acquisition system developed in this research were carefully sampled and used to train the neural network : 4) Development of neural network model ; a neural network model was developed to identify the relationship between the growth stage and image textural features.
