Research Abstract |
The prevalence of food allergy and/or intolerance (FA/FI) were studied in a large samples of students at the university of Tokushima, Tokushima, Japan. The survey was carried out on self-reported FA/FI investigated by questionnaire which was conducted at the annual medical examination. In the first year (1994) a total of 1853 students consisting of 1300 male and 553 female was examined. It was found that only 2.5 male students and 2.9 female students had been told by medical doctors prior to the questionnaire. A statistically significant difference was found between male and female subject in the number of those who experienced allergic episodes due to food allergy. Causative foods were milk and milk products, meat, cereals, vegetables and others including coffee. Some students were considered to suffer from glucose intolerance. tification of IgE by enzyme immunoassay using a commercial kit. Attempts were made to obtain the optimal conditions for EIA. In the second year (1995), a total of 3025 of students belonging to The University of Tokushima was asked to report their episodes of food allergy and other related diseases by means of questionnaire at the time of their annual medical examination. Out of 3025 only 53 students were found to be of incompliance due to rejection for unknown reasons. Only a total of 99 students reported to have experienced reliable episodes of food allergy. The prevalence was about 26%. NO statistically significant difference was found between male and female group of students in the prevalence. Causative foods were in order milk and milk products, sea foods, cereals, vegetables and others including coffee. Other observations were similar to those obtained in 1994. Sera obtained from a test group of students having positive food allergy based on questionnaire were also examined for quantification of IgE using an automatic EIA analyzer (Poseidon II model AEC 2000, Aloka, Tokyo). The control group involved sera collected from students without no episode of any disease entities nor injury in the questionnaire.
