Research Abstract

Streptococcal cationic protein (SCP), appearing as a band of 10 kDa on SDS gels and pI>9.0, was purified from the nephritogenic strain of the patients with acute poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis. This protein had a high affinity to the glomerular structure. The rats injected twice with 150 mug of SCP at one week interval developed proteinuria and diffuse mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis. By immunofluorescence, the deposits of rat IgG and C3 were localized in the mesangium and partly along the capillary wall. No remarkable renal changes were found in the kidney of control rats. These results suggest that SCP may be an unique bacterial antigen which induces glomerulonephritis through in situ immune complex formation.
