Research Abstract

During cancer invasion and metastasis, anscer cells must degradate extracellular matrix around cancer nests. We have already reported that proteolytic enzyme activity correlated to the degree of malignancy of the cancer (Keio J.Med.39 : 159-167,1990).
In this study, we tried to analize which cells produce these enzymes (matrix metalloproteinases : MMPs) and how they are regulated in the local region. For this purpose, in situ hybridization using cDNA probe for MMP-1 was carried out in GI tract cancer tissues.
We have recealed that stromal cells and blood cells, especially eosinophiles, produce MMP-1 and could play impotant roles in cancer invasion and metastasis.
In conclusion, not only cancer cells but host cells such as fibroblasts and eosinophiles are regulating the steps of degradation of extracellular matrix during cancer invasion and metastasis.
