Research Abstract

Ultraweak biophoton emission from mice with transplanted bladder cancer was detected by a two-dimensional photon counting system. Results of the study indicate that 1.51 to 4.73 times higher photon counts were observed from the regions of untreated tumor when compared to those from normal regions.
Fluorescence spectra of human semen excited at 488 nm for each component in 10mM PBS were scanned in a range of 500 to 700 nm. Under these conditions, emission peaks from each component were observed at 622 nm. The intensity of emission peaks from spermatozoa at 622nm correlated strongly with the concentration of spermatozoa (r=0.837, p=0.0001). Sperm motility also correlated significantly with fluorescence intensity emission peaks from spermatozoa (r=0.369, p=0.019) and semen plasma (r=0.356, p=0.024).
We measured the fluorescence spectra from drugs used for the treatment of idiopathic male infertility as compared with that from human semen. Of several drugs used for idiopathic male infertility, clomiphene citrate and one Chinese herbal medicine (Hochu-ekki-to) yielded very similar fluorescence emission patterns to those of semen, seminal plasma and spermatozoa from 500-700 nm with 488 nm excitation. Based on these previous data, the results of our present study suggested that drugs with a similar fluorescence pattern to semen may contribute to improve semen quality directly.
