Research Abstract

To examine a role on renal kallikrein-kinin system in experimental hydronephrotic rats, we measured urinary kallikrein activity before and after transient complete urinary obstruction. As a result, urinary kallikrein activity decreased during unilateral ureteral obstruction and slightly increased after removing obstruction. In bilateral ureteral obstuction for 24 hours, urinary kallikrein activity decreased for three days after removing obstruction. However, urinary kallikrein activity increased for the subsequent three days. In bilateral ureteral obstruction for 48 hours, urinary kallikrein activity remained to be decreased after removing obstuction. These findings suggest that renal kallikrein-kinin system may be suppressed during uranary obstruction and may be activated when urinary obstuction is removed in early phase. Further study is necessary to elucidate a role of renal kallikrein-kinin system in hydronephrosis.
