Research Abstract

The purpose of this project is to elucidate the relationship between proliferative vitreoretinopathy and the two kind of cells involved in proliferative vitreoretinopathy. The effect of transforming growth factor beta 2 (TGF beta 2) on fibronectin synthesis by cultured rat retinal pigmented epithelium and rat retinal glial cells was assessed. TGF beta 2 stimulated fibronectin synthesis by the two cells in a dose-dependent manner. Retinoic acid reduced TGF beta 2 induced-fibronectin synthesis by rat retinal glial cells.
We also developed a new wound healing model of retinal pigment epithelial cells in sheet culture. In this model, retinal pigment epithelial cells retains its characteristics including microvilli and tight junction better than the cells in the cell culture, producing a better model in wound healing.13EA03 : The effect of TGF beta on phagocytosis of rod outer segments by retinal pigment epithelial cells was also evaluated. TGF beta 2 reduced phagocytosis of rod outer segments by retinal pigment epithelial cells.
